What is acupuncture?
Classical Chinese acupuncture is based on the concept of ‘Qi’, life-force and the meridian or channel system. By placing ultra fine needles at specific points along these channels, biochemical changes can stimulate the body’s natural healing abilities.
There has been some research led by neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School studying acupuncture’s anti-inflammatory response, which suggests that when acupuncture points are used on the body’s surface, they trigger nerve signaling that affects the function of other parts of the body, including organs. These sensory neurones trigger an anti-inflammatory response via this signaling pathway.
Acupuncture remains a respected and effective modality within both traditional and modern healthcare systems. It has been practised for over 3000 years in China and other parts of Asia, where it then spread to Europe and America from the 16th century onwards.
Acupuncture in the UK took off in the 1970’s where some individuals brought the knowledge and skills over enthusiastically. One of these pioneers was Dr Van Buren, who played a central role in bringing acupuncture to the West. He was a renowned acupuncturist who was in practice for 50 years and he founded ICOM, the International College of Oriental Medicine. This is now the oldest acupuncture college in Europe and where I had the honour of training and graduating as an acupuncturist.
